Life with a service dog

 from Emma

Mary has a very bad cold. We went to swimming but she got the shivers andd felt icky. She came home and went right to bed. I have Greg to play with but also take time with Mary. I tried really hard to nose her enough to get her to play fetch with me.
Since Greg was here she released me to go play with him. We were outside a long time which was really fun. Then a nap with Mary seemed good.
Mary is off to bed again. Maybe she will feel better Friday.

 Medical Appointments

We spent the afternoon at the eye doctor and then the family doctor. Monday we will be seeing a Pulmonary specialist. Emma was on her best behavior. I was so proud of her. Each place I just had to show her where to settle in and she was content to wait for me. The interesting thing was in the eye doctor waiting room there were two very activie young boys. There mom explained why they could not pet a working dog. You could tell it was very difficult for them but they did not pet the dog. There was plenty of room so they just watched her from across the room.

By contrast, in walked three adults. They asked if they could pet the dog - I said I am sorry you can't she is working. They looked at me in disbelief. One lady still reached down as if to pet her but I moved Emma out of her reach. Then another person came in (adult) and without asking was quickly almost kneeling on the floor face to face with Emma and petting her. She explained she couldn't resist.

Now here are children more than eager to see a dog and they can control themselves. One of the children said "I guess she doesn't know the rules". I guess not. Normally I am not as irritated as I was today...but there was such a sharp contrast to the boy's behavior and that of the adults. Made me wonder who is the mature one here??

Emma of course did just fine. She kept her attention on me. When the woman was face to face with her she looked at me as if to say "what do I do now". If I do give someone permission to pet her I say "release" to Emma. Emma knows even in that situation she comes back to my command quickly.

Our cleaning lady comes tomorrow so I have a little picking up to do. It is such a treat to have help with house work. I should have done more earlier but the day flew by.

I am considering switching family doctors. Today I had a different clinic doctor who said he would be happy to be my primary physician. He liked the dog which was nice. The doctor I had been seeing was afraid of the dog. He also is easier to talk with I thought. We'll see they are both thorough.

Take care and stay healthy.

 A Night Out

We went out to dinner. A real treat. We went to Que Viet in Brooklyn Park it has yummy food. Emma was great. She found her spot even in a small space. I was proud of her. We got lots of compliments. the food was yummy and the portions so big it will be dinner for tomorrow also! It is a small cozy place on a rainy night.

During the day Rosa was here. That was fun but she has a little bit of a cold. I am always happy to see her. She had fun petting Emma and being with her. Grandpa was home today and that was nice. He was busy with projects but took breaks to see Rosa. Emma also got outdoors more because he was working outdoors until it started to rain.

Emma is a dog. I had some treats in m pocket. I put my pants on the bed only to find her helping herself to the few treats that remained there. See sometimes she acts like a dog. She would "leave it" if I said to but I didn't see her till it was gone. I caught her munching on the last one - there wasnt' much in there. I use the puppy size milk bones.

tomorrow is our medical day. My counselor in the morning, metro mobility home. My eye doctor in the afternoon and then my family doctor.

We are going to watch "House" a tv show I like and then head to bed. Hope you are warm and cozy if it is raining where you are at. Wishing you a good Wed.

 A Good Day at Home

Lily was with us till afternoon today. Both dogs were eager to be outside a great deal as Greg's brother is doing some outdoor painting for us. It sure seemed quiet once Lily left. We took a late afternoon nap. Both dogs had a good time I think.

Emma shared my attention while Lily was here. When she left and I went to lay down she cuddled so close to me. I realize how much you know your own dog's routine and habits. I do see Lily at her house though. Sometimes I would wonder what Lily needed. Going outside was a good guess. Lily likes to be outside and see what is going on. She and Emma were outside a lot today.

I am not sure but this might be the week they start team training. 5 individuals and their dogs will start the process of getting to know one another and the skills to have a service dog. Even if you are getting a successor dog you go through training. I imagine they are al very excited. i remember being excited.

I remember how Emma would be in the kennel waiting for me. I wondered how long it would take for her to know I was her partner - we were a team. I hoped she would be happy living with me. Now I think she is pretty content with me. I sure know her well and she can read my moods as well. What a great dog.

I was pleased to get a note from a woman that use to be my son Dan's teacher. She was at the Helping Paws Dinner. She was pleased to have time to talk to Dan but I did not see her. She took the time to write a nice note. Gosh that meant a lot to me. A day brightener.

We had a nice day at home. Greg is off this week and working on house projects. He is such a hard worker. I wish I was capable of doing more to help. Rosa and Sophia came by to visit with Mike when they picked up their dog. We will babysit Rosa here tomorrow. That will be enjoyable.

Emma looks ready for bed. Hope you have a good week - Mary and Emma
Hope Lily is enjoying being back at her own home with her own family. She is a very nice dog. So cute.

 A Rainy Sunday

Lily, Emma and I cuddled in for a rainy Sunday. My husband worked a long day at the church. Lily and Emma are getting along fine. Our only problem is their desire to go out. I have to take them out for them to see it is pouring rain - then both look at me as if to say "Are you nuts? I am not going out in that". It finally calmed down so they could take care of bathroom needs. It was not a day to play outside.

Lily likes to climb up in bed for naps or at bedtime also. Emma does not seem upset. Though she wants to be the one closest to me. I am glad things have gone so smoothly for both of them. When I fed them side by side Emma got a little perplexed. I used her measuring spoons for both. i think she thought I was giving Lily "her" food. I wasn't. I showed her and told her to leave Lily's alone and yes she listened. The command "leave it" came in handy.

We hope to fold laundry while watching tv tonight. Again today, I did not get a lot done. I suppose my body needed the rest. I am always limited in what I can do due to the MS. It just seems more noticeable to me when i am home all day, feel like i stay busy, but have so little to show for it. I move like a turtle. My cleaning woman comes this week and that is a very good thing.

The dogs are pretty cute together. Lily is barking so I better go see what is going on. They have been nice company today. Emma is coping well with sharing my attention.
